At it's simplest, a surety bail bond agent is just an insurance agent who sells bail bonds.  Contrary to popular belief, as an agent, you don't necessarily have to go out and hunt down people who missed court.  Although a surety bail bond agent license allows you to arrest people who missed court, it's your choice.  It doesn't require that you be big and burly, like many TV show characters idolize.  All different types of people become surety bail bond agents.

Virtually all positions in the industry are paid on commission based on the number and amount of surety bail bonds that are posted by the agent.  The amount of commission varies depending on many factors, but generally between 20% and 50% of the amount collected.  The more people you know in your community, the better chance you'll have at earning their business.

In Ohio, surety bail bond agents are regulated by the Department of Insurance.  Once you're licensed, you're free to seek employment and apply at any licensed agency in the state.  You are not locked into any specific agency.

There are several different requirements to obtain your surety bail bond license.  These requirements include, but may not be limited to:

Must be 18 years of age; Have never committed any acts of fraud, financial dishonesty, and other offenses as specified in ORC 3905.14 (This is verified by a fingerprint check prior to licensure); Complete a pre-licensing class (Our self-study class is currently $225*); Pass an examination given by the State; Pay the up-front fees for background check and testing  (Approximately $105*), and yearly fees for licensure (Approximately $150*).

Furthermore, you cannot be a surety bail bond agent if you are currently employed or licensed in the following professions:

Jailers or detention facility employees; Peace officers or employees of a law enforcement agency; Magistrates or employees of a court or clerk of court; Attorneys; Any person having the power to arrest or having control over prisoners.

If you're interested in becoming an agent, your first step is taking the pre-licensing class from a provider or school authorized by the Department of Insurance.  We are an authorized provider for the self-study class.  Please contact us for more information by calling.
